Work has always taken up most of my day since the first time I started working. Most of the time, I’m juggling at least two jobs at a time. But that was about to change when I signed up as a volunteer for Pure Heart Philippines during the NYD 2019.

For one week, I was juggling my paid and volunteer work. I signed up to take care of National Youth Day delegates, which Pure Heart Ph hosted at the Yellow House. Alongside another PH server, Angelo, we made sure that the delegates were comfortable when they were at home after their long day of pilgrimages and formation with the parishes. Angelo accompanied the children going to and from the parishes, while I took care of other things. We worked while the delegates were away.

The Beauty of Working With the Youth

Working two jobs in one day might have been my normal. But this experience was way more than I expected. I was so tired at the end of each day, but I was also extremely happy and blessed to meet such enthusiastic youth from different parts of the country. We had delegates from Davao and Palo, Leyte, who also graciously shared their stories, motivations, and intentions for joining the event.

This event helped me reflect on the beauty of encountering the youth and seeing them live their faith. Most importantly, this experience gave me a new perspective on work and the meaning of life.

I often hear people say they want to build wealth first and then volunteer later in life when they’re already financially independent. Yes, it’s good to build wealth. But all we really have is now. So, it’s equally important to strike a balance between work and service because who knows we won’t get to the point of being wealthy.

After NYD 2019, I realized the importance of each hour and minute of our life. As I worked, I made sure to hit all my deadlines to avoid backlogs. And while I was with the delegates, I also enjoyed listening to their stories with genuine eagerness, despite my stress at work. Lastly, service is a habit. It’s good to develop it as early as possible.
